Our metric combines satellite data and advanced algorithms, linked to the largest physical global database of terrestrial carbon sinks — so our information is up to date and accurate.
On top of that, an independent physical audit by third-party inspectors verifies the data, adding a second perspective on every carbon sink.

The Carbon Sink Model
Only terrestrial carbon sinks regularly convert CO₂ into oxygen — but the exact amounts vary substantially from location to location.
To make a reliable statement on the conversion capacity of any stretch of land or sea, we work with the scientific community and several world-class research institutions.
Our lead scientific partner is the Crowther Lab Research Group. Building on peer-reviewed research, they developed the Carbon Sink Model, which provides data on the carbon storage capacity for every square kilometre of every terrestrial location on Earth — backed by research collaborations with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Centre, the Max Planck Society and the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization.

The connection between an Emitter and a Convertor becomes visible, so both parties know exactly with whom, for what, and for how much they are entering a transaction. Christopher’s story
“I’ve often been asked why we started OXÏ-ZEN, and what led to it?
You see, I’m a full-time father of four, and in my free time, I’m an entrepreneur, aerospace engineer and professional pilot. Flying an aircraft gives you an amazing perspective on life, and time to reflect on the essence and purpose of being. It also raises doubts about one’s own actions, and where we are heading. And ultimately, how will our children tomorrow judge our actions today?
And so a few years back, we developed an innovative airline business model called AÏZEN. The point was to integrate a double CO₂ offset into the operating model: if we’d produce, say, 50 tons of CO₂ on a flight between Geneva and New York, we’d offset twice that amount — 100 tons of CO₂. If the offset were done using trees, we would not only be carbon negative, but our net product would be oxygen. The idea is simple: if all businesses would strive to be carbon negative, we could by default start to reverse the disastrous slide towards global warming and climate change.

It was at that point we started to look into carbon certificates and carbon offsets, only to realise that there is no way we could actually claim, much less prove, that we would indeed be producing oxygen.
To make matters worse, we found out that the current Emission Trading Schemes to a large extent have no direct effect on climate change at all. This was the moment we realised something was missing: a simple and transparent system that would allow us to directly identify and engage with a Convertor of our choice, and get immutable proof of exactly how and where our CO₂ was being converted into oxygen. We wanted no middle men in this system, no obscure accreditations, no long stories, no paper trades, no tear-jerking NGOs — simply no zig, no zag. That led us to conceive and develop OXÏ-ZEN.
